Japanese Cuisine
After a long day in Tokyo’s old downtown, Shitamachi, you’re hankering for some grub, but what’s around? And more importantly what’s good? Read on to find out.
Kunimi (國見)
Enjoy a luxurious traditional Japanese meal as you look out over Oshiage from the 31st floor. The wide windows give you the perfect close-up view of Skytree. Even if you’re on a budget, don’t count this place out just yet; the lunch sets are relatively affordable at under 4,000 yen per crab plate.
Okimaro (おきまろ 沖縄カフェ&居酒屋)
Small eatery by day and bar by night, this little Okinawan restaurant might not be what you usually think of when you picture Japanese cuisine. Okinawan island cuisine is the amalgamation of the native Ryukyu people’s cuisine, Japanese cuisine, and a bit of American cuisine thrown in for good measure. Some must try dishes are the Okinawan soba, Spam fried rice, and (for the adventurous) the bitter melon champuru.
Horumon Musashi (ホルモン武蔵)
While offal (innards) may not be everyone’s cup of tea, for meat lovers this place is to die for. Grab a beer and grill diverse cuts of meat to your hearts content. This restaurant does have an English menu, but the names of these cuts are not for the faint of heart.
Vegan/Vegetarian Options
While you may have to venture a little father from the Skytree Town building to grab a bite, the Sumida area does have a couple places a hop, skip, and a jump away.
Sasaya Cafe (ささやカフェ)
A pleasant 10-15 minute walk from Skytree through a local green space, Sasaya Cafe is a local favorite. Their indoor seating provides ample space for larger groups. On nice days terrace seating is also available. With sandwiches, curries, sweets, and even beer, there is a little something for everyone.
Marugoto Vegan Dining Asakusa (まるごとVeganダイニング浅草)
Less than 10 minutes by train or a 20 minute scenic walk over the river, Marugoto is the perfect lunch spot. The little eatery has a perfect view of Sumida River. They have gluten free options available and menus with English translations.
